A Mass for Manila evokes the earliest great liturgies of the Philippines through Francisco Guerrero’s Missa Sancta et immaculata. Inspired by the arrival of Manila’s first bishop in 1581 and the founding of the city’s first cathedral, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, the program interweaves movements of the Mass with chant, motets, and instrumental music, recreating the splendor of those early liturgies. For this rare reconstruction, Cappella Pratensis—recently honored with a Gramophone Classical Music Award and praised as “a unique voice in the world of Renaissance polyphony”—joins forces with Piffaro, hailed as “North America’s masters of music for Renaissance wind band,” to bring this remarkable musical world vividly to life.
